Day of Fasting and Prayer for Peace

Cardinal Wuerl to Celebrate Mass for Peace and Justice on September 7
A day of prayer and fasting for peace in Syria, the Middle East and throughout the world

Recently, Pope Francis called on Catholics and those throughout the world to join in a day of prayer and fasting for peace in Syria, in the Middle East, and throughout the world. The Holy Father noted that this initiative comes out of the need to address the violent challenges to peace, to human solidarity and to freedom, particularly religious freedom.

In communion with the pope’s request, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington will be the principal celebrant and homilist at a Mass for Peace and Justice at the Basilica of the National Shine of the Immaculate Conception. Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, will represent Pope Francis and offer words of support for this effort. Monsignor Ronny Jenkins, the General Secretary for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will also be present.

Mass for Peace and Justice

Saturday, September 7, 2013
12:10 p.m.
Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Crypt Church
400 Michigan Avenue, NE
Washington, DC

The Mass will coincide with the opening Vigil for Prayer in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome, and will allow the faithful in the Archdiocese of Washington to be spiritually united in prayer with the Holy Father as well as the faithful throughout the world in prayer for peace.

###
The Archdiocese of Washington is home to over 620,000 Catholics, 139 parishes and 96 Catholic schools, located in Washington, DC, and five Maryland counties: Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s.

Lawn Mowers Needed!

Spring is here and with it the beginning of grass mowing season. In preparation for mowing, please remember to remove last years’ cemetery flower arrangements or position them on top of the headstones to make mowing easier. St. John’s is still in need of volunteers to mow the campus. We have lawn mowers and weed trimmers but still need additional people to operate them, especially the trimmers. The mowing schedule is very flexible, and with enough volunteers, would only require about 1.5 – 2.0 hours every
two weeks. Please consider this valuable contribution to the Parish. Contact John Shimski at 301-373-8961 or jshimski@md.metrocast.net for more information.
