Financial Peace University Information

Free First Class – September 12 – Join us in the St. Jude Room from 6:00pm to 7:30pm to attend the first class to see what Financial Peace University is about. If interested in continuing you can enroll.

Financial Peace University consists of an 8 week video curriculum taught by financial expert Dave Ramsey. Financial Peace University Classes Beginning Soon

Financial Peace University consists of an 8 week video curriculum taught by financial expert Dave Ramsey. This is a life-changing program teaching people to achieve their financial goals by eliminating debt and saving for the future. Financial Peace University is highly entertaining for everyone, with a combination of humor, informative financial advice, and biblical messages. People will be challenged and motivated to make a plan for their money and change their family tree forever. Financial Peace University provides biblically based commonsense education and empowerment which gives HOPE to everyone from the financially secure to the financially distressed. Class materials and lifetime membership is $95 per family (husband, wife, teens, individuals and engaged couples). PREVIEW and registration will be held after 9:00 and 11:30am Masses on August 12th and 26th in the St. Jude Room. Information New Choir Meeting

An informational meeting will be held in the Msgr. Harris Center on Tuesday, July 31st at 6:30pm for anyone interested in joining a new choir to sing Gregorian chant and Latin polyphony. Prior singing experience and ability to read music are not required---just bring a reverent heart and a desire to glorify God by singing this beautiful traditional music of the Church. Corpus Christi Procession

Please consider joining us at the conclusion of the 9:00am Mass this Sunday, June 10th for the Corpus Christi Procession celebrating the feast day of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The procession will leave the church and stop at three stations for prayerful adoration on the grounds to include the site of the future Adoration Chapel. We invite children second grade and under to participate in the procession by bringing baskets and flower petals to scatter along the procession route.

St. John's Parish Memorial Mass

The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a Memorial Day Mass and Service on Monday, May 28th, starting at 7pm. Everyone is welcome to attend as we honor those who died while defending our freedom. Our guest speaker will be Brigadier General Arthur Hinaman, Commander, Land Component Command, District of Columbia National Guard, and a reception will follow the outside service in the Monsignor Harris Center.

DC HOOD BASKETBALL GAME/EVENING OF FUN

Join us for an evening of basketball and fun - Friday, June 1, 2012 from 5-9pm at the Monsignor Harris Center!

The DC Hood, a team of seminarians and young priests, will be playing a team of St. John’s and Immaculate Heart of Mary parishioners at 7:15pm. Preceding that game will be a youth vs. adult game at 6pm and a SJS 7th & 8th grade game at 5pm. It’ll be an evening of basketball and fun.

Face painting and tattoos • contests w/prizes • photos taken as a priest or sister • giveaways • concessions • music and more • plus free pizza and soda following the last game – spend some time hanging out with the priests and seminarians, and cheer on our parish teams

Blue Crabs Spirit Night - this Friday!


Join us for fellowship and fun at our St. John's Blue Crabs Spirit Night on Friday, May 18. The game is at 7:05pm, followed by fireworks. Tickets are $13 each. Please see the flyer on our website for details and go to “Fundraising login” for information on purchasing tickets. You must log on through this process with our sjs code for our school to get credit. We currently have seats in Section 7, but will get additional seats as we sell out. If we sell enough tickets, we will get Video Board recognition, a Marketing table on the concourse, and a Ceremonial First Pitch. We get to walk down on the field before the game for our school to be recognized. Our Chorus will also be singing at this event (more info to follow). May Events at St. John’s!

Let’s pray for and celebrate our young communicants as they prepare for their First Holy Communion this Saturday, May 5th. May they feel the Lord’s presence within.

The Knights of Columbus will be having another delicious breakfast Sunday, May 6th. Breakfast is served from 7-11am in the Msgr. Harris Center (MHC). Come and have breakfast with your fellow parishioners. All are invited. Cost is a donation.

The Catholic Church in Maryland is working with the Maryland Marriage Alliance to repeal legislation passed by the General Assembly to drastically redefine marriage in Maryland. Petition drives will be held the weekend on May 5th-6th. YOU MUST BE REGISTERED TO VOTE IN ORDER TO SIGN THE PETITION. You also must print your name as it appears on your voter registration. Plan to bring your voter registration card with you to the petition drive, or visit HERE to see how you registered.

May 5th and 6th, the Youth Group will be selling hanging flower baskets as a fundraiser for an upcoming trip to DC to visit the Basilica, Franciscan Monastery and the Convent. Flower sales will be on Saturday from 11am-3pm and after the 5pm Mass and Sunday after all of the Masses. The baskets will be selling for $15 each and will be sold outside of the Church (in the MHC foyer if it’s raining). Your support for our parish Youth Group is greatly appreciated. Great gift for Mom!

Join St. John’s for a night of faith and fun at a live CAT CHAT concert. Cat.Chat concerts are specifically geared for young families with kids (preK- grade 6). The songs are dynamic and packed with God’s Word and Catholic teachings that bring children into a refreshing experience of Catholicism. The concert is filled with powerful music, crowd participation, unicycling, juggling, yo-yos, prizes, good humor, prayer times and family fun. After the concert, the Cat.Chat family and Moses the Cat stick around to take photos, sign autographs and “chat” with the families. Doors open at 6pm (food is available for purchase) and the concert starts at 6:30pm on May 12th at St. John’s Church, Monsignor Harris Center. The concert is free to attend. Sunday May 13th - Annual May Procession and Crowning of the Statue of our Lady will take place directly at the conclusion of the 9am Mass on Mother's Day. Please join us for this moving tribute of fealty to our Lady as the second graders dress again in their First Communion Day finest to escort the May Queen and her court.

DC Padres vs. SMR Varsity Baseball Game!

What better way to show your support for vocations than by enjoying a great baseball game on a Sunday afternoon. We have a number of tickets available at $5 each for the DC Padres vs. St. Mary’s Ryken varsity game on Sunday, April 29th. The tickets get you into both the DC Padres game and the Blue Crabs game that precedes it. You must arrive prior to the 7th inning of the Blue Crabs game (that will be about 3:30pm) to attend the Padres game. This will be fun-filled family afternoon. Please help us support a number of our local priests and seminarians as the play ball for vocations.

On Sunday April 29th, @ Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf MD, the home of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.


The Blue Crabs play at 2pm and the Padres VS Ryken game will begin afterwards between approximately 4:30 and 5:00pm. Bishop Martin Holley will open with a prayer and throw out the first pitch.

Congratulations Catholic Bee Winners!


Congratulations to all of our school and parish 4th and 5th graders who participated in the Knights of Columbus first annual Catholic Religion Bee here at St. John’s on Wednesday, March 28th. Placing third was Ryan C., a 5th grader at Leonardtown Elementary. Placing 2nd was Sam M., a 5th grader at FAW. And winning first place was Augustine O., a 5th grade home-schooled student. All three students will move on to the District Competition. The top six finishers at Districts will then move on to the State Competition on April 21st. Good luck guys! A special thanks goes out to KOC, Chris Woehrer for hosting the Bee and for all of his work making it happen.
