Christmas Angel Tree

This annual program provides Christmas gifts to needy children. This year the program will be directly focused on providing gifts not only to the children of St. John’s parish families but we are happy to announce that we are adding several families from Holy Angels parish to the Angel Tree program. We are happy to be able to return in a small way the kindness of Holy Angels parishioners who were so generous to us in providing their school for our use until our new school was completed. The Angel Tree will be in the lobby of the Monsignor Harris Center on November 19th. Tags with numbers representing each child and the gift requested will be placed on the Tree. Names will be kept confidential and will not appear on the Angel Tree. Those wanting to provide gifts can take a tag from the tree and bring the gift to the lobby of the Monsignor Harris Center before or after Masses. We are also seeking donations of Christmas wrapping paper and bows which can be placed in the basket near the tree. We are blessed to have so many parishioners who have always been extremely generous in providing Christmas gifts to the children of our community through the Angel Tree program. Without your charitable giving the program could not be the success it has been over the past years. May God bless you all for your continuing acts of charity.

Daily Mass Change/Communion Service

On Wednesday and Thursday mornings, one of our Deacons will be offering a Communion Service instead of our regularly scheduled 8am Mass.

Since the early days of the Church, the Eucharistic Bread has been reserved in order that the faithful who are sick and those who are unable to be present for the celebration of the Eucharist might be able to share in the fruit of the Eucharistic meal. Since Vatican Council II, we have been given a rite for "Communion outside Mass" which does not specify "sickness" or "inability to attend Mass" but includes the needs of the faithful when there is not, or cannot be a celebration of Mass.

Tuesday and Wednesdays is a good example of such an occasion, since all priests of the Archdiocese have been called to a Convocation at the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Cambridge for three days. the host that will be used were consecrated at Mass on Tuesday morning in the Communion Service. We will listen to the Word of God, and share this Eucharistic Bread as food for our faith journey. We partake of the Bread of Life so that as God's holy people, we might become more and more the Body of Christ in our time and place.

An Easy Way to Support St. John's School!

One of the easiest ways to support St. John's, our parish school, is by linking your store rebate/savings cards to St. John's School.

St. John's School is registered with school fundraising programs through Giant, Target, McKay's and Food Lion Stores. You can help our school earn dollars by simply designating St. John's School as the school to benefit each time you shop at these stores. Just remember - St. John's benefits only when you use your bonus card each time you shop! It's automatic once you link your cards to our school!

You can register your cards online by following the links on this page: Store Rebate Programs - Click Here!

Please take 5 minutes to register your cards. Then you'll support St. John's School the whole year! (Please note: several stores require you to reenroll your cards each year.)

As always, thanks for supporting St. John's School!

Apologetics Course Beginning Sept. 11th - Consider Attending!

An Apologetics Course will begin on Sunday, September 11th in the St. Jude Room immediately following the 9am Mass (from 10:05-11:20). Registration fee is $25 to cover the cost of books and materials.

Have you ever struggled with trying to explain or defend our Catholic Faith? How do you respond when someone asks you “have you been saved?” or “why do you worship Mary?” (we don’t by the way) or “why do you baptize babies when the Bible is clear that only adults should be baptized?” (wrong again) or when asked about another aspect of the Faith that is commonly misunderstood? Have you wondered what other religions/faiths believe and why some of them are so adamantly opposed to the Catholic Church? We’ll be tackling those types of questions and misconceptions in an Adult Apologetics Course that will be offered at the same time as Sunday morning Religious Education. Learn how to define and defend the Catholic Faith as we are all called to do through the Sacrament of Confirmation. If your children attend Sunday morning Religious Education, this is a great way to occupy your time while they’re in class. All adults are welcome. Ken Scheiber, a theology teacher at St. Mary’s Ryken, holds a master’s degree in theology and will be teaching this course. Sign up on line at:- http://www.stjohnsparishhollywood.org/Education/Register-Adult.aspx#ht=500.

Parish to Decide Daily Mass Time

We are considering changing the starting time of daily Mass from 8 a.m. to 7 a.m. to allow more people the opportunity to attend.

There will be voting slips and pencils in the pews during the four Masses the weekend of Sept. 17 and 18 for you to select your preference. Since there won’t be a second collection that weekend, the ushers will collect the survey responses after Communion. The votes will be tallied and the results will be announced the following week.

Thanks in advance for your time and cooperation.
